Let’s start this sensitive topic, by a question.
Have you watched any movie focuses on the child’s special learning need?
If you have, then it’ll be easier for you to connect to this topic.
The term special education need is used to adapt the need of the student who aren’t
capable of learning like most of the average student can.
In a class of 10, 15, or a certain numbers of students, not everyone can adapt your
learning style.
E.g. student who has poor eyesight should be made sit in the front, so they can things
on the board clearly.
It’s a small example of sitting arrangement in a class, but explains about the need of the
student get served rightly.
There’re various teaching strategies used to facilitate students with special learning
needs.
In this post, let’s understand SEN and what’re the different kinds of it.
So, let’s get started:
What is SEN (Special Education Need) learning?
The term SEN is self - explanatory, students who has different learning needs
based on their psychometric test are termed SEN students.
Yes, students who need special education had to go through a psychometric test, which
decide whether the child requires special education or not.
If s/he require, what exactly the need is, and how to designed a suitable plan to provide
the best support.
Psychometric Test: A set of questionnaire designed by an expert assess the student’s
mental ability to learn and understand a concept.
Based on the psychometric test, the school designs IEP (Individual Education Plan) to
help student in their learning growth.
Types of Need in Special Education:
Understanding the different kinds of children’s needs in special education uncover its
importance.
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder):
Here’re the main signs of students diagnosed with ADHD.
Poor attention span
Got hyper frequently
Autism:
Student may have high interest for a particular thing. Children with Autism shows different signs.
They see world with completely different sense of view unlike their peers.
Specific Learning Disability:
Specific learning disability is different than learning difficulty.
Some students may feel difficulty in reading, talking, answering questions, refers as speech disability.
Some kids may have issues while participating any activity require to be physically active.
Pupils got really nervous and confused when it comes to deal with arithmetic or number problems.
Kids who got trouble writing letters or words, and have issues while holding a pen appropriately.
All these learning disabilities are addressed by different terms relate to special
education need.
Physical disability:
I personally don’t consider physical disability in the category of special need education,
as the students perform equals to the other students in the class, and sometimes even
better.
At times, these students feel restricted is in play area, and inclassroom if the
environment isn’t suitable for students have some disability.
Special Education Needs Must Be Practiced At Global Level : The Conclusion
The role of student and teacher is interconnected. What one does, impact the other.
Where students are expected to follow their teacher in the class, the teacher is also
expected to behave in a way that student love to learn from them, practice whatever is
asked them to do, and wishfully grow following your guidance and path shown to them.
Special education needs students have started to get spotlight, but it’s just the
beginning.
A few schools in the urban areas are bringing the practice of inclusive education, but in
tier 2 & 3 areas, it’s still a dream for parents to see their special need learner child going
to school, getting educated, and shining in the world.
